The K-beauty playground arrives in Los Angeles

"Wait, this is the product I've been seeing all over TikTok."

It was one of the most common reactions we heard on May 29 when OLIVE YOUNG opened its first U.S. store in Pasadena, California.

For Korean consumers, this scene is nothing new. Discovering new beauty products, testing them in-store, and finding the right products for your skin has long been part of the shopping experience.

For many Americans, however, it felt different. K-beauty products have been available in the U.S. for years. Consumers could order them online, watch reviews on TikTok, and follow recommendations from influencers. But for the most part, the experience ended there. What many customers encountered for the first time at OLIVE YOUNG wasn't simply a K-beauty store. It was a Korean beauty platform.

On the same day the Pasadena store opened, OLIVE YOUNG also launched its dedicated U.S. online store. Together, they represent the next phase of the company's global expansion and bring 27 years of Korean beauty retail expertise to American consumers.

Why the U.S. and why now?

K-beauty is no longer an emerging trend in America. Sheet masks, cleansing balms, serums, cushion foundations, and sunscreen have become staples in beauty routines across the country. Social media has transformed Korean beauty into a cultural phenomenon, introducing millions of consumers to Korean brands and beauty rituals.

For OLIVE YOUNG, the demand was already clear. The United States has consistently been the largest market on the company's global e-commerce platform, accounting for more than half of total sales. American customers have been purchasing Korean beauty products directly from Korea for years.

The products were already here. The experience wasn't.

That realization became the foundation of OLIVE YOUNG's U.S. expansion strategy. The goal was not simply to open another beauty store. It was to introduce the discovery-driven shopping experience that Korean consumers have enjoyed for decades.

Los Angeles was the natural starting point. As one of the world's most influential trend-setting cities, Los Angeles sits at the intersection of beauty, entertainment, wellness, and culture. It is also one of the most diverse cities in America and a major gateway for Korean culture and K-beauty.

Within Los Angeles, Pasadena stood out as the ideal launch location. Known for its vibrant community and openness to new trends, Pasadena brings together both longtime K-beauty enthusiasts and consumers discovering Korean beauty for the first time. It offered the perfect environment to introduce OLIVE YOUNG's discovery-focused retail experience to American shoppers.

What makes OLIVE YOUNG different?

The Pasadena store spans approximately 8,647 square feet and features around 500 brands and more than 5,000 products. Yet the store's size isn't what makes it unique. What sets OLIVE YOUNG apart is its approach to discovery.

Visitors can receive complimentary skin and scalp analyses, test products freely, compare familiar brands with emerging ones, and explore categories ranging from skincare and makeup to wellness and lifestyle products.

While this type of shopping experience is common in Korea, it remains relatively rare in the United States. Many visitors spent as much time exploring and learning as they did shopping. Throughout the opening weekend, one phrase came up repeatedly: "K-beauty playground."

It may be the simplest way to describe OLIVE YOUNG. More than a place to buy products, it is a place to discover them. The Pasadena store was designed with U.S. consumers in mind, dedicating approximately 60 to 70 percent of its assortment to skincare, one of the strongest-performing categories in K-beauty. Yet our data also reveals something interesting: many of the products most loved by international customers are the very same products Korean consumers purchase every day.

Because ultimately, consumers are not looking for products from a specific country. They are looking for products that work.

Why Korean sunscreen is one of the most exciting categories today

One category that has particularly stood out during our U.S. expansion journey is sunscreen. In the United States, sunscreen is regulated by the FDA as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug, creating a higher regulatory barrier than in many other markets.

Despite these challenges, Korean beauty brands continue to innovate. Recent FDA-compliant sunscreen launches from brands such as Round Lab, Anua, and Beauty of Joseon demonstrate how quickly the industry has adapted. Compared to earlier generations of OTC-compliant products, today's formulas offer significantly improved textures, wearability, and overall user experience.

This evolution reflects one of K-beauty's greatest strengths: its ability to innovate quickly while responding directly to consumer needs. At OLIVE YOUNG, products are selected based on quality, performance, and customer experience, not country of origin. Alongside leading Korean brands, customers can also discover global beauty and wellness brands throughout the store.

Still, the growing success of Korean sunscreen highlights why K-beauty continues to resonate with consumers worldwide.

Building the future together

For more than two decades, OLIVE YOUNG has served as a platform where brands can be discovered, consumers can explore new products, and innovation can thrive.

The opening of our first U.S. store follows the same philosophy. We did not come to America simply to sell Korean products. We came to introduce a retail model built around discovery, education, and experience.

The next chapter of K-beauty will not be defined by a single viral product. It will be driven by an ecosystem where beauty, wellness, culture, and innovation come together. OLIVE YOUNG can help create that path. Brands can help expand it.

And for American consumers, the journey is only beginning.
